If you have a piece of furniture that has a solid frame or was passed down from a family member, then it is well worth the cost to reupholster. The piece you are thinking about buying new is going to be about the same price, but you are limited on the choice of fabric, and the quality of the frame and workmanship is standard at best. I have read that a recliner can be made in 7 minutes in a furniture production line and seen newer pieces made with glued plywood! If you want quality craftmanship and a piece that will last for many years, then upholstering is the way to go.
